The Alchemy of Pigment Granulation in Mountainscapes
Granulation is one of the most sublime qualities unique to watercolor painting. Unlike flat acrylics or oils, granulating watercolor pigments possess heavy, irregular mineral particles that sink into the valleys of cold-press cotton paper while the lighter carrier water evaporates.
My Favorite Granulating Triad:
French Ultramarine (PB29) + Burnt Sienna (PBr7) + Cobalt Violet (PV14). When mixed with abundant water, they separate dynamically on the paper to create atmospheric mountain rock faces without a single brushstroke of detail.
To maximize granulation in your alpine paintings, always work on Rough (Torpy) or Cold-Press 300gsm+ paper. Keep the board at a gentle 15-degree incline and avoid disturbing the wash with repeated brushwork once the pigment begins to settle into the paper tooth.

Mastering Wet-on-Wet Transitions Without Mud
The biggest struggle for watercolorists is timing the paper's moisture level. Water flows toward dry areas, and pigment always chases water.
The Four Paper Saturation Phases:
- Mirror Sheen: Flooded with water. Ideal for soft dawn sky gradients and distant horizon washes.
- Satin Sheen: Water has penetrated fibers; paper looks velvety. Best for soft-edged clouds, trees, and mountain shadows.
- Matte Dampness: Surface shine is gone, but cool to the touch. Dangerous zone — adding watery paint here will cause unwanted blooms/cauliflowers.
- Bone Dry: Crisp, hard edge glazing and final dry-brush calligraphy.
